| 1917 | Aldergrove Airport was selected by the RAF training centre during World War I. |
| 1921 | King George V and Queen Mary visited Northern Ireland, landing at Aldergrove, to later become known as Belfast International Airport. This was a high profile visit with newsreel being taken and shown after their return.

| 1925 | A special reserve unit from Ulster of the RAF was formed at Aldergrove, being Northern Ireland's own unit.

| 1928 | A new route began which became the nucleus of the Belfast Airport. |
| 1933 | A route from Glasgow to Aldergrove began, operated by Midland and Scottish Air Ferries. It became Northern Ireland's first regular civil air service.

| 1933-34 | Aldergrove became Northern Ireland's civil airport. |
| 1934 (August) | First service from Northern Ireland to London. It began to Nutts Corner and was operated by Railway Air Services. It flew from Croydon to Birmingham and Manchester and on to Belfast.

| 1938 | Neville Chamberlain opened the Belfast City Airport. |
| 1946-1963 | Aldergrove continued as a RAF base, largely for the Coastal Command. Civil flights were moved back to Aldergrove because of better weather conditions there than at Nutts Corner.

| 1963 | The present terminal building was inaugurated by HRH Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. At that time, Aldergrove was opened again as a civil airport.

| 1966 | Regular jet service began to Gatwick Airport. |
| 1969 | Belfast International Airport had the number of airport passengers exceeding one million for the first time.

| 2005 | US carrier, Continental Airlines, began service from Belfast International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, USA.
